A lot of people say, “Mujhe heavy base pasand nahi,” but most of the time the problem is not the foundation — it’s the skin prep. When your skin is smooth, hydrated and balanced, even a light layer of makeup looks luxe and expensive.
Whether you’re a Delhi bride, going for a cocktail night in South Delhi or a soft glam photoshoot, this pre-makeup routine will help your base sit better, last longer and look more natural in real life as well as in photos.
Step 1: Cleanse (but don’t strip)
Start with a gentle cleanse so your skin is fresh, not tight. You want to remove sweat, pollution and leftover skincare, but keep your natural glow intact.
- Oily/combination: Lightweight gel cleanser
- Dry: Cream or milk cleanser
- Sensitive: Micellar water + very gentle face wash
Pat your skin dry with a soft towel — no harsh rubbing. Think of this as resetting your canvas.
Step 2: Soft exfoliation (1–2 times a week)
Makeup always sits better on smooth skin. But exfoliation should be smart, not aggressive.
- Use a mild chemical exfoliant (AHA/BHA) 1–2 times a week
- Avoid harsh scrubs with big beads that scratch the skin
- For big events, exfoliate the night before, not right before makeup
If your skin gets red easily, skip exfoliation on the day of your function.
Step 3: Hydrating toner or mist
Think of this step as giving your skin a glass of water. A hydrating toner or mist:
- Adds a light layer of moisture
- Helps makeup blend better
- Prevents your base from clinging to dry patches
Spray or pat it in and let it absorb for a few seconds before the next step.
Step 4: The right moisturizer for your skin type
This is where a lot of people go wrong — ya toh bilkul moisturizer nahi lagate, ya phir bahut heavy cream laga lete which makes the base slip.
- Oily skin: Oil-free gel moisturizer
- Dry skin: Nourishing cream moisturizer
- Combination: Gel on T-zone, cream on drier areas
Apply a thin, even layer and give it 1–2 minutes to sink in before you move ahead.
Step 5: Under-eye prep for smooth concealer
Under eyes tend to be drier, and that’s exactly where we apply concealer. A little under-eye cream:
- Softens fine lines
- Makes concealer blend more easily
- Prevents the area from looking cakey
Tap it in gently with your ring finger — no dragging.
Step 6: Primer to match your makeup style
Primer is like a filter between your skin and base. It changes how the final makeup looks and lasts.
- Blurring primer: Great for visible pores and textured T-zone
- Dewy/illuminating primer: Perfect for soft glam bridal looks
- Mattifying primer: Good for long events, outdoor functions or very oily skin
Apply primer only where you need it — usually centre of the face, sides of nose and chin.
Pre-makeup do’s & don’ts (Save this list)
- ✅ Do your skincare at least 15–20 minutes before leaving home
- ✅ Let each layer (moisturizer, primer) absorb properly
- ✅ Match your skincare to the weather – lighter in humid Delhi summers, richer in dry winters
- ❌ Don’t try completely new products on the day of your event
- ❌ Don’t overload skin with too many heavy layers before makeup
- ❌ Avoid thick face oils right before applying foundation
When your skin is prepped well, you don’t need a very heavy base. Even soft glam makeup looks expensive, fresh and photogenic — exactly the kind of finish we love creating at Pout Vibes.
